RuhrKunstMuseum

LUDWIGGALERIE Schloss Oberhausen is a member of the RuhrArtMuseums The 20 art museums of the Ruhr have joined forces to form the network RuhrArtMuseums. The majority of the museums focus on art of the 20th century and the present. Art of the 19th century, as well as old masters and non-European art is also represented in impressive collections in individual museums.
Stretching across 15 cities, from Duisburg to Hamm and from Hagen to Marl, there is a cohesive network of distinguished collections which are housed in industrial heritage buildings, palaces, outstanding architectures of the post-war period and spectacular new buildings.
A visit to the museums is, at the same time, a representative foray into the architecture of the Ruhr.
The cooperation of the RuhrArtMuseums impressively illustrates the diversity of modern and contemporary art of the museum landscape Ruhr. By means of joint communication, exhibition activities and intermediary work, visitors and locals have been able to experience the variety of museums on offer in the Culture Metropolis Ruhr in a focussed way since early 2010.
At the beginning of their cooperation, the integration of the different museums was successfully highlighted in the European Capital of Culture Year RUHR.2010 through the joint art education programme ”Collection Tours“; in parallel, the museums presented the exhibition series ”Mapping the Region“.
Through the integration of bigger and smaller museums with national and international relevance, the RuhrArtMuseums will – after a successful start – not only effectively strengthen cultural education and mediation and develop exhibitions that reflect the future of the third biggest European agglomeration Ruhr through the means of art, but will also primarily increase awareness of their collections in the long term.
Under the heading “RuhrKunstMuseen. Die Sammlung (RuhrArtMuseums. The Collection)“, the first joint catalogue was published in 2010. It does justice to the network’s central idea of making the diverse art landscape with its unique collection of modern art visible. Following on from an introductory essay by Georg Imdahl about the ”Images of the Ruhr“, there are 150 pages of colour illustrations of the museums’ masterpieces. After this foray into art history until the present, there are profiles of the individual museums with photographs of the exhibition spaces and the architecture. Amongst the collection’s highlights are works by Liebermann, Renoir, Matisse, Lehmbruck, Marc, Macke, Kirchner, as well as Albers, Richter, Stella, Schumacher, Höfer and Turrell.
The publication, which can be found in the 20 museums and in bookshops, has been made available in German, with an English summary.
A free information brochure, which is available in all RuhrArtMuseums, offers a concise overview of the museum landscape Ruhr, suggestions for museum tours and practical information for the visit to the museums.
