Excursion to Villa Hügel

On the occasion of the exhibition "21 x 21. The RuhrArtMuseums on the Hill", the Friends' Circle is offering its members a day trip to Villa Hügel in Essen on April 26th. The exhibition offers a thematically related experience of the diversity and quality of the works of art in the museum collections of the Ruhr region. The LUDWIGGALERIE is one of the 21 RuhrArtMuseums and is contributing seven works of art from its holdings to this large joint exhibition.

In the morning, the participants will visit the exhibition as part of a guided tour and then exchange their impressions over a shared lunch.

Afterwards, there will be an overview tour of the representative and living rooms of Villa Hügel. Details of the building's history as well as in-depth information on the Krupp company and family history are part of the tour.

That's what friends are for

We see it as our task to promote art and education through the ideological and financial support of the LUDWIGGALERIE Schloss Oberhausen. Helping with the preservation, collection, care and presentation of cultural assets is the focus of the association's work. Another primary goal is to introduce different age and population groups to the offerings of the LUDWIGGALERIE Schloss Oberhausen. Donations - for which we are happy to issue a donation receipt - are always welcome.

To mark the silver anniversary of the LUDWIGGALERIE, there was a large museum festival in and around Oberhausen Castle.

In addition to guided tours and children's activities through the municipal painting school, an open ArtOthek and a presentation by the Friends of the LUDWIGGALERIE, special highlights were planned for the visitors:

A panel discussion moderated by Dr. Christine Vogt on 25 years of the LUDWIGGALERIE Schloss Oberhausen and how it all began with Burkhard Drescher, former mayor of the city of Oberhausen, Jeanette Schmitz, former managing director of Schloss Oberhausen GmbH, Walter Queins, former managing director of the Peter and Irene Ludwig Foundation, Aachen and Bernhard Mensch, former director of the LUDWIGGALERIE Schloss Oberhausen. A keynote speech by Dr. Kristin Knebel, director of the museums of the city of Bamberg. The Friends of the LUDWIGGALERIE wins the Homeland Prize of the City of Oberhausen

16.12.2022

For special commitment in Oberhausen, Mayor Daniel Schranz awarded the Oberhausen Homeland Prize on Thursday, December 15, 2022, at the Oberhausen Theater. It was the second time that the prize was awarded. Three winners were honored: The first prize, worth 7.500 euros, went to the Friends of the Ludwiggalerie, the second prize (1 euros) went to the Literaturhaus Oberhausen and the third prize (5.000 euros) to the Sterkrade historians Alfred and Ulrich Lindemann.

In his welcoming speech, Mayor Daniel Schranz acknowledged the great and consistent commitment of the award winners, the nominees and many other citizens: "Those who put their heart and soul into their hometown - for example, ensuring that culture flourishes, that history is not forgotten or that community is strengthened - help ensure that Oberhausen remains such a great place to live." The Mayor also thanked the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, which provides the prize money for the Hometown Prize.

This year, the Homeland Prize jury honored the Friends of the Ludwig Gallery for their special commitment, which enabled the monumental pop art steel sculpture "Red Heels" to be created and installed in front of the Ludwig Gallery on Konrad-Adenauer-Allee. "With the 'Red Heels', Oberhausen has gained a significant work of art in a prominent public space," explained gallery director Dr. Christine Vogt in her laudation. Mayor Schranz presented the prize to the board of the Friends of the Ludwig Gallery, chaired by Jutta Kruft-Lohrengel.

CONGRATULATIONS – 10 Years of Friends of the LUDWIGGALERIE

11.04.2021

On April 11, the club celebrates its anniversary

The Friends of the LUDWIGGALERIE are turning 10 – a lot has happened in this time. Numerous purchases, publications, museum education projects, valuable restorations and framing would not have been possible without the commitment of the association.

This enabled works to be acquired for exhibitions such as The Gesture, British Pop Art, Linda McCartney, Jacques Tilly and Art About Shoes and added to the city's collection. The results of the restoration work were on display in the presentation The O. Collection - Restored Works, among others. This was also made possible by the highly acclaimed sponsorship concept that the LUDWIGGALERIE first introduced in 2014 for the pictures in the O. Collection that were in need of restoration. Interested parties - both members of the Friends' Circle and other interested parties - can become art sponsors and thus make a concrete contribution to the purchase or preservation of a work.

As a member of the Friends' Circle, you are part of the lively cultural life of the LUDWIGGALERIE Schloss Oberhausen. With free admission to the exhibitions all year round, you can enjoy art and culture as often as you like. You will be personally invited to all exhibition openings, programs and lectures. Members of the Friends' Circle receive discounts on many of the varied events. Tickets for excursions and special programs can be reserved for members first. The program can include a look behind the scenes of the museum's work as well as a visit to friendly RuhrKunstMuseen in the local area.

RED HEELS – a sculpture by Heiner Meyer for the LUDWIGGALERIE Schloss Oberhausen as part of the exhibition

20.03.2021

RED HEELS is the name of the work that will greet people on Konrad-Adenauer-Allee in front of the LUDWIGGALERIE and in front of Oberhausen Castle. The German and internationally renowned pop artist Heiner Meyer came up with the design and erected a large, red pyramid of high-heeled women's shoes. High heels in fashionable shapes are stacked up to form a dancing formation, referencing the world of objects in pop art and developing a charm all of their own. XXL consumer products that set a design accent and spiral into the sky.

This sculpture was only made possible by civic engagement. Companies in and around Oberhausen made this large form a reality. Essen-based Klöckner & Co. donated the steel (6 tons, after all!). Franken Apparatebau from Oberhausen-Sterkrade made the cutout and coordinated the implementation of the ton-heavy project. The Diekmann engineering office calculated the extremely complicated statics. The Essen-based company wefa, Westdeutsche Farben GmbH, mixed the special paint especially for RED HEELS. Ferdinand Hövelmann Spedition GmbH from Dinslaken provided the heavy transporter and the cranes that are essential for the installation come from the Jaromin company. All of these complicated trades were carried out for the LUDWIGGALERIE as a grant. This shows the real interest people have in the local museum and of course in the wonderful location of Oberhausen Castle.

The Friends of the LUDWIGGALERIE, particularly the first chairwoman Jutta Kruft-Lohrengel, are also extremely committed to the project. A crowdfunding campaign with the commitment of numerous citizens also provided financial support - with sponsorship from evo. And the city of Oberhausen made it possible to set up the gallery quickly and without red tape by obtaining all the necessary permits.

Thanks to this extraordinary commitment, we can present the sculpture RED HEELS, a new artistic eye-catcher and hopefully soon a new landmark for Oberhausen, from Friday, March 19, 2021.

With Heiner Meyer's shoe work, the LUDWIGGALERIE gains a large piece of art in a prominent public space. In the future, even in times of restricted viewing of art, three-dimensional design will always be on display in Oberhausen for everyone and free of charge. The shoe, an item of clothing that affects us all, will now permanently characterize one of the most historic places in Oberhausen.

Curator Rainer Schlautmann led a tour of the STOFFWECHSEL exhibition in the Little Castle. The art library invited visitors to browse. Anniversary: The Friends Circle is 5 years old!

26.10.2016

Five years have flown by – and the LUDWIGGALERIE Friends’ Circle is already celebrating its first small anniversary. Congratulations!

Many purchases, framing, publications, museum education projects and valuable restorations would not have been possible without the generous support of the Friends. The LUDWIGGALERIE collection is now pleased to include works from the exhibitions EVE ARNOLD, HERLINDE KOELBL, HAIR!, GREEN CITY and ULF K. In addition, paintings and graphics were restored that were on display last year in the exhibition The O. Collection - Restored Works in New Splendor.

This was also made possible by the highly acclaimed sponsorship concept that the LUDWIGGALERIE first launched in 2014 for the paintings in the O. collection that were in need of restoration. Interested parties – whether members of the circle of friends or not – can become art sponsors for various amounts and thus make a very concrete contribution to the purchase of a new painting.

Supporters are now being sought again! In the small castle's cabinet, not only purchases made can be seen, but also a wall of wishes. In particular, for the upcoming exhibition LET'S BUY IT! in January 2017, various works by Joseph Beuys, Laas Abendroth and Klaus Staeck are waiting for sponsors.
